FAQs
How much does the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL cost?
While standard monofocal IOLs are typically covered by insurance or Medicare, premium lenses like the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL often involve an additional out-of-pocket expense. Pricing can vary depending on your individual insurance coverage, the facility, and whether you choose the standard or toric version (for astigmatism). At Beverly Hills Institute of Ophthalmology, we’ll provide a detailed cost breakdown and discuss financing options during your consultation.
Are there any risks or complications associated with the Odyssey™ IOL?
Like all surgical procedures, cataract surgery with IOL implantation carries some risk, including infection, inflammation, retinal detachment, or lens dislocation. While rare, some patients may experience visual side effects such as glare, halos, or reduced contrast sensitivity, though these are less common with Odyssey™ compared to other multifocal lenses.
Will I still need glasses after receiving the Odyssey™ IOL?
Many patients achieve functional vision across all distances without glasses, especially for everyday tasks like driving, reading, or using a smartphone. However, depending on your unique eye anatomy and healing response, you may still prefer glasses for very specific tasks or under certain lighting conditions.
How long does the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL last?
The Odyssey™ IOL is made from durable, biocompatible materials designed to last a lifetime. Once implanted, it does not degrade or require replacement, barring any unforeseen eye trauma or complications. Most patients enjoy stable, long-term vision improvement following surgery.
Can the Odyssey™ IOL be removed or exchanged if needed?
While uncommon, the Odyssey™ IOL can be surgically exchanged if medically necessary—for example, in cases of incorrect lens power, rotational misalignment (with toric versions), or rare cases of patient dissatisfaction. Our team carefully screens candidates to minimize the need for future revision surgery.
Is the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL suitable if I have had LASIK or PRK in the past?
Patients with prior refractive surgery, like LASIK or PRK, require careful evaluation due to changes in corneal shape. While the Odyssey™ IOL may still be an option, specialized calculations and additional testing are often needed.
Will I need to follow any long-term care routine with the Odyssey™ IOL?
Once implanted, the Odyssey™ IOL is maintenance-free. However, regular eye exams are essential to monitor your eye health and ensure the lens continues to perform as expected. Occasionally, a secondary condition called posterior capsular opacification (PCO) can occur months or years after surgery; if it does, it’s easily treated with a quick, painless laser procedure (YAG capsulotomy).
