What Is an IOL?

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are medical-grade, artificial lenses implanted in the eye to replace the natural lens when it becomes clouded by a cataract. Crafted from advanced materials such as foldable acrylic or silicone, IOLs are most commonly used during cataract surgery.

During surgery, the eye’s clouded natural lens is carefully removed and replaced with an IOL, allowing light to once again focus appropriately on the retina. This not only clears away the blur caused by cataracts but often reduces or eliminates the need for glasses or contacts.

Near to Far, Day or Night: What Sets Odyssey™ Apart

While traditional IOLs typically correct vision at only one distance (usually far), leading many patients to rely on reading glasses after surgery, advanced lenses like the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL offer a breakthrough alternative.

Unlike standard or even earlier-generation multifocal lenses, the Odyssey™ IOL delivers a full range of high-quality vision without compromising clarity or contrast, even in dim lighting.

Once implanted, the Odyssey™ IOL becomes a permanent part of the eye, providing long-lasting, low-maintenance vision correction that truly fits your lifestyle.

In U.S.-based clinical studies:

  • 94% of patients were satisfied with their vision without glasses
  • 96% were confident in reading on smartphones or tablets
  • 92% were satisfied with their ability to see steps and curbs at night

Odyssey™ IOL Benefits

  • Best-in-Class Image Contrast: See more clearly in low-light conditions. Odyssey™ delivers superior contrast sensitivity, giving you sharper images even in challenging environments.
  • Enhanced Tolerance to Refractive Error: Designed to be more forgiving of slight imperfections in vision correction, offering reliable clarity, even if outcomes aren’t perfectly centered.
  • Optimized Dysphotopsia Profile: Odyssey™’s innovative freeform diffractive profile significantly reduces visual disturbances such as halos, glare, and starbursts.

Am I a Good Candidate for the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL?

You may be a strong candidate for the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have visually significant cataracts that are affecting your daily activities
  • You are looking for a lens with a low incidence of bothersome visual disturbances, such as glare, halos, or starbursts, especially at night
  • You have low to moderate levels of corneal astigmatism; if you have ≥1.0 diopter of astigmatism, the Odyssey™ Toric II IOL may be recommended to correct both cataracts and astigmatism
  • Your ocular health is stable, with no significant preexisting conditions that may affect surgical outcomes, such as severe macular degeneration
  • You do not have a history of prior corneal refractive surgery (such as LASIK or PRK)

What to Expect Before, During, and After

Consultation

Your experience begins with a comprehensive eye exam and surgical consultation. During this visit, we will:

  • Confirm the presence and severity of cataracts
  • Evaluate your overall eye health, including corneal shape, lens clarity, and retinal condition
  • Discuss your visual goals, lifestyle needs, and preferences regarding glasses independence
  • Determine if the Odyssey™ IOL or Odyssey™ Toric II IOL is appropriate for your vision profile
  • Perform precise measurements using advanced biometric technology to calculate your IOL power
  • Provide detailed preoperative instructions, including guidance on medication and eye drop use

Procedure

Cataract surgery is a quick, outpatient procedure in one of our state-of-the-art surgical suites. Local anesthesia with light sedation to keep you comfortable and relaxed, and the entire procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes per eye.

A microscopic incision is made through which the clouded natural lens is gently emulsified using advanced techniques such as femtosecond laser or phacoemulsification. The lens is removed and replaced with your custom-selected TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL.

Because the incision is self-sealing, stitches are usually not required, and most patients return home shortly after surgery with only a protective shield over the eye.

Recovery & Results

Recovery from cataract surgery is generally rapid and straightforward. Most patients experience noticeable vision improvement within just a few days. Here’s what to expect immediately after surgery:

  • Mild soreness, watering, or a gritty sensation is normal and typically subsides within a day or two
  • You’ll be given post-operative eye drops to prevent infection, control inflammation, and support healing
  • Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and rubbing your eyes for the first week
  • If both eyes require surgery, the second procedure is usually performed within 1 to 2 weeks

Most patients experience dramatic improvements in clarity, color perception, and depth of vision. With the Odyssey™ IOL, you’ll enjoy continuous, high-quality vision from near to far, often without needing glasses. Over 90% of patients report satisfaction with night vision and digital device use, thanks to the lens’s advanced contrast performance and reduced glare profile.

FAQs

How much does the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL cost?

While standard monofocal IOLs are typically covered by insurance or Medicare, premium lenses like the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL often involve an additional out-of-pocket expense. Pricing can vary depending on your individual insurance coverage, the facility, and whether you choose the standard or toric version (for astigmatism). At Beverly Hills Institute of Ophthalmology, we’ll provide a detailed cost breakdown and discuss financing options during your consultation.

Are there any risks or complications associated with the Odyssey™ IOL?

Like all surgical procedures, cataract surgery with IOL implantation carries some risk, including infection, inflammation, retinal detachment, or lens dislocation. While rare, some patients may experience visual side effects such as glare, halos, or reduced contrast sensitivity, though these are less common with Odyssey™ compared to other multifocal lenses.

Will I still need glasses after receiving the Odyssey™ IOL?

Many patients achieve functional vision across all distances without glasses, especially for everyday tasks like driving, reading, or using a smartphone. However, depending on your unique eye anatomy and healing response, you may still prefer glasses for very specific tasks or under certain lighting conditions.

How long does the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL last?

The Odyssey™ IOL is made from durable, biocompatible materials designed to last a lifetime. Once implanted, it does not degrade or require replacement, barring any unforeseen eye trauma or complications. Most patients enjoy stable, long-term vision improvement following surgery.

Can the Odyssey™ IOL be removed or exchanged if needed?

While uncommon, the Odyssey™ IOL can be surgically exchanged if medically necessary—for example, in cases of incorrect lens power, rotational misalignment (with toric versions), or rare cases of patient dissatisfaction. Our team carefully screens candidates to minimize the need for future revision surgery.

Is the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL suitable if I have had LASIK or PRK in the past?

Patients with prior refractive surgery, like LASIK or PRK, require careful evaluation due to changes in corneal shape. While the Odyssey™ IOL may still be an option, specialized calculations and additional testing are often needed.

Will I need to follow any long-term care routine with the Odyssey™ IOL?

Once implanted, the Odyssey™ IOL is maintenance-free. However, regular eye exams are essential to monitor your eye health and ensure the lens continues to perform as expected. Occasionally, a secondary condition called posterior capsular opacification (PCO) can occur months or years after surgery; if it does, it’s easily treated with a quick, painless laser procedure (YAG capsulotomy).
