Farsightedness in Beverly Hills (hyperopia) is when nearby objects appear blurry and indistinct, but you retain the ability to see distant objects. The degree of farsightedness varies from person to person. Farsightedness is related to the shape of the eyeball, lens, or cornea.

What causes farsightedness?

Farsightedness can run in families. The condition can occur with aging, as the eye structure loses its natural flexibility, and is no longer able to focus on nearby objects. Farsightedness is typically a refractive error, a curvature issue of the cornea or lens, or astigmatism. The most common treatment is to evaluate the extent of the condition and treat it with custom eyeglasses or contact lenses. You also have the option to undergo advanced vision correction and enjoy clear vision without the need for glasses or contacts.

Symptoms of farsightedness

The symptoms of hyperopia include:

  • Nearby objects, such as books, computer screens, faces, or any other close object is blurry
  • You have to squint to try to see a nearby object clearly
  • You experience eyestrain, a burning sensation, or aching
  • You notice you develop a headache or discomfort when working on up-close tasks

Surgery for farsightedness: Your options

Are you tired of the hassle of wearing glasses or contacts? If you are looking for a long-lasting solution for clear eyesight when reading and seeing nearby objects clearly, our eye surgeons at Beverly Hills Institute of Ophthalmology perform the most advanced treatments for vision correction.

  • LASIK: LASIK is the most commonly performed surgery to correct farsightedness. A custom reshaping of the cornea corrects how the light lands on your retina.
  • PRK (photorefractive keratectomy): The cornea is surgically reshaped with an advanced laser (excimer laser). The thin top layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed to reshape the curvature of the cornea. The epithelium naturally regrows over the surface of the cornea within a few days.
  • RLE (refractive lens exchange): An artificial intraocular lens (IOL) replaces your natural lens to correct farsightedness that allows for focusing on objects near and far.
  • LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis): A variation of PRK, performed with the excimer laser, and appropriate for those with thinner corneas. An ultra-thin flap of the top layer of the cornea is separated using the excimer laser, moved to one side of the eye structure, and then replaced after reshaping the underlying structure.
