Laser Cataract Surgery

Remove Your Cataracts and Restore Your Sight

A pioneer in the refractive cataract surgical field, Dr. Khodabakhsh was the first to incorporate the innovative Catalys Femtosecond Laser in cataract surgery. Since its first use in 2011, Drs. Khodabakhsh and Hofbauer have been the leading ophthalmologists in this technique, accomplished in both performing and training others in the procedure. Laser cataract surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, with local anesthesia used to numb the area. After making a tiny incision with the beam from a Femtosecond Laser, the surgeon uses an ultrasonic instrument to emulsify the lens material (this is called Phacoemulsification or Phaco). The surgeon aspirates the material out of the eye through the tiny incision, which requires no stitches.

Laser Cataract Surgery often is called a “bladeless surgery” procedure. Studies have indicated that a laser incision may be more predictable and repeatable than an incision made with a blade (or scalpel), creating a better overall outcome. The laser incision also lowers any risk of damaging the capsule of the eye.

Every human eye is just a bit different in terms of size, depth, and other key features. The Femtosecond Laser utilizes highly-advanced technologies (such as integrated optical coherence tomography or OCT) to capture high resolution images of your eyes. The surgeon uses these images to plan and perform a surgery to exacting specifications not attainable with traditional surgery.

Options after Cataract Removal

When the cataract is removed, your natural lens is removed as well. At this time, the surgeon will implant an Intraocular Lens or IOL to replace the lens. Before surgery, the surgeon will help you decide which type of IOL is best for you.
