A condition known as open-angle glaucoma can often cause frustrating vision problems, and is often the result of a buildup of pressure inside the eye, due to a failure of fluid filling it to properly drain. This drainage system that works to maintain an appropriate amount of pressure inside the eye is known as the trabecular meshwork, and its failure can cause the onset of open-angle glaucoma.

Selective laser trabeculoplasty, also known as SLT, is a highly-advanced surgical procedure by which your eye’s ability to properly drain fluid is increased, thereby lowering the pressure inside the eye and working back against the onset of glaucoma.

Common Symptoms of Glaucoma

One of the most surefire ways to determine whether or not you’re dealing with glaucoma is to set up an in-person eye exam at either our Beverly Hills or Torrance, California locations. We’ll work closely with you to not only determine the source of your vision issues, but also to develop a treatment plan that will best restore your vision, and your full quality of life along with it.

Some of the most common symptoms that come along with glaucoma include:

  • Halos around lights
  • Redness in the eyes
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Blurry vision
  • Vomiting
  • Pain in the eyes

A Safe and Painless Laser Procedure to Lower IOP

In Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), the surgeon uses a low-level energy laser to target specific cells in the mesh-like channels where fluid flows out of the eye. Using very short applications of light, the surgeon enlarges the openings so fluid will flow more readily. The treatment has been shown to lower intraocular pressure (IOP).

Nearly half who receive this SLT Laser surgery develop increased IOP again within five years, and then undergo a repeat treatment. In a healthy eye, a system is in place to maintain an even amount of pressure within the eye, taking care to drain fluid as the eye continues to produce more and more. Sometimes a blockage inside the eye can prevent this drainage from properly taking place, which is one of the causes of what’s known as open-angle glaucoma.

If you think you’ve been dealing with glaucoma, and are interested in a way to resolve these frustrating vision issues, our SLT laser procedure might be perfect for you.
